Visit to Paxton Pits

It was surprising pleasant weather, just right for a nice stroll at a wonderful nature reserve just outside St Neots called Paxton Pits. They have plenty of parking available and a nice visitor centre that supplies a good deal of information about the reserve and has some nice home cooked cakes and also supplies a decent cup of tea.

After a 10 minute stroll you find yourself at the Heron Hide which has a decent view of the main lake. There I could see 2 Grey Herons stalking the edge, one hovering over a poor unfortunate fish and the other one prening itself. I saw numerous kingfishers flitting around with there wonderful aquamarine strip on their back standing out in the sunshine. A number of Cormorants were about on the numerous islands which had been created by the nearby quarry pumping out a lot of water recently.

I was then fortunate enough to see a Greater Spotted Woodpecker land on the nut feeder just in front of the hide, it had a beautiful red lower belly and I got a couple of good pics of it too.My camera is only a Lumix Bridge Camera but it has a good zoom lense, not huge like some of the people I have seen taking pictures but it is a start and a way of learning how to take decent pictures.

Paxton have also just upgraded the next hide along, the Kingfisher Hide and made it a lot bigger for people and a lot more comfortable. It is a great place to see Kingfishers.

It is worth an afternoon walking around Paxton Pits even if your not a keen birdwatcher.
