RSPB Fowlmere Christmas 2017

I arrived at Fowlmere at about 10.15am and it was quite a nice day, not much wind about and a light covering of cloud. Good light for taking photographs of Birds.

I met the other members of the group and we proceeded along the decked pathway through the trees and across the water and rushes, we then arrived at the first Hide, the Spring Hide.

We all sat down and watched for any sign of Birds, about 10 minutes later we all spotted a male Bullfinch in the tree to our left, it was a beautiful colouring but unfortunately when I put my camera on it, it flew off, shortly after that the female went to the same tree, she had a pinky underside.

One of the people with us spotted movement in the trees to the left of the hide behind a concrete kingfisher nest, we waited and then we saw a Muntjac deer, it saw us and froze, it then walked very slowly past us along the edge of the field and off into the distance. (See picture below.)

After about 20 minutes without anything happening we then decided to go onto the main Hide which is only a short walk away. It is much higher up and gives you a good view of the surrounding reed beds and water. You occasionally get a Kingfisher flitting around but not today. We did see a group of Teal Duck and a pair of Shoveller Ducks (See picture below). We didn't see anything for a little while and then a huge black bird came out of the reeds to our right and flew across in front of us. It was a Raven, it never called or made a sound it was amazing. It wasn't a crow because a crow had flown past a few minutes before. We are quite lucky to have Ravens in this area now. When the Raven went off into the distance we decided to go round the other side of the reserve to the other hide.

This hide is where I have seen a Kingfisher before so I was hopeful that my colleague would see his first ever Kingfisher. We sat and waited and saw various birds like Moorhens and Mallard but unfortunately no Kingfisher. It is a nice little hide and very quiet and peaceful.

The RSPB reserve at Fowlmere is really a nice walk and if you are lucky you can see all sorts of animals and birds. If you like wildlife then go along and have a look for yourself.
