RSPB, The Lodge, Sandy

I joined a group of fellow Birdwatchers in the Car Park near the Gatehouse and we began to walk along a pathway which is adjacent to the entrance of the reserve. It was quite a nice day and we saw various Finches and a selection of Great Tits and Blue Tits.

We then stumbled upon a strange looking Mushroom, which I was informed by one of my friends was a Puffball mushroom. He picked up a small stick and pressed the top of it gently and loads of what I thought was smoke came out in a puff, these were spores which help create new Puffballs.
The reserve area we were in used to be mainly Heathland but it seems alot better now and loads of different trees and plants growing in which will eventually lead to more species of birds appearing in the area and different habitats too for reptiles and mammals to live in.

We then proceeded past the Hilltop (see view) and into a wooded area which led to the Quarry, it was quite an interesting walk and we found loads of different fungi and mushrooms.

Then we came across a huge amount of birds in a section of trees to the back of the main building which were Gold Crests, Long Tailed Tits and a group of Coal Tits and Great Tits too.

I have not been to the Lodge at Sandy for a couple of years and I must say it really is a lovely walk around although probably not for some people as they have lots of steps and things you need to climb up and over to get around especially near the Quarry.

When we finished our walk we went and saw the Event which was going on, they had a Bird Tagging Tent and just as I arrived they tagged a Brambling, which is a beautiful little bird and also Blue Tits, Coal Tits and a couple of female Blackbirds.

Lovely view from the Hilltop near the Ravens Nest
A Puffball Mushroom, which if you press it with a twig shoots out spoores
